Western States Sheriff's Convention in Reno

Posted: Updated:

The Western States Sheriff's Association is holding its annual business and training conference at the Peppermill Casino.

The conference will host an exhibit show where organizations display new products for the law enforcement officials and training meetings.

These meetings are designed for the sheriffs to collaborate together to resolve problems affecting them in the west.

Dave Brown, President of the association, says a few of the issues being discussed are the management of public lands and training of jail operations.

“15 western states and sheriff's from all of those being represented here, it's amazing what we can learn from each other, we're all dealing with similar issues, some are dealing with difficult issues," says Brown.

The sheriffs also look at the newest ways to use social media, and at how law enforcement is perceived to the public. They will also meet with organizations like the Forest Services, BLM and ICE to discuss the best ways they can work together with the federal agencies.

"When you draw a voice of 200 to 300 member sheriffs together and come to some consensus on an issue, we have some power in that voice with our federal partners," says Brown.

Local agencies like the Washoe County Sheriff's Office are also taking part in this conference which will come to an end on March 3rd.
