The Nevada baseball team lost a five run lead with two innings remaining before suffering an 8-7 loss in 10 innings to UC Irvine on Saturday at Anteater Ballpark.

The Wolf Pack jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and later led 7-2 after the top half of the eighth inning. The Anteaters responded with two runs in the eighth, three in the ninth to force extras and a walk-off run in the tenth to win, 8-7. Nevada falls to 3-4 on the season, while UC Irvine improves to 4-3.

Junior shortstop Justin Bridgman led Nevada with two hits and two RBI. The Pack also received two hits apiece from junior Miles Mastrobuoni, sophomore Jordan Pearce and sophomore Grant Fennell. Sophomore RHP Mark Nowaczewski started for Nevada and allowed two runs on five hits in three innings, while the Wolf Pack used six pitchers overall.

Nevada jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases with one out. Sophomore TJ Friedl opened the scoring for Nevada, lining a two-out single to right field to score Mastrobuoni and senior Bryce Greager. The Pack added to more runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Fennell hit a lead-off triple before scoring on a throwing effort on and Greager scored Bridgman with an RBI sacrifice fly.

In the third inning, redshirt freshman Keaton Smith hit a lead-off double and scored on senior Justin Hazard’s sacrifice fly to put Nevada in front by a 5-1 margin. Nevada added two runs in the eighth inning to expand its lead to 7-2. Hazard drew a walk and Fennell doubled to but two runners in scoring position before Bridgman plated both with a two-RBI double.

It was all UC Irvine from that point on as the Anteaters scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. With two outs and the bases loaded, UCI Irvine’s Alex Guenette hit a walk-off, RBI single to win the game.

The final game in the series is set for a 1 p.m. PT first pitch Sunday at Anteater Ballpark.
