Senior Megan Sweet has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week after hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three home runs and nine RBI in a 5-0 weekend for the Nevada softball team, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The senior is the first Wolf Pack player to earn the weekly honor since current volunteer assistant coach Erin Jones was named MW Player of the Week on March 18, 2014. It’s the first Player of the Week honor for Sweet, a two-time All-Mountain West selection.
Sweet, who posted nine assists and committed no errors at shortstop, also scored five runs while compiling an 1.825 OPS with only one strikeout in14 at-bats.
The Bakersfield, Calif., native played a key role in the Pack’s undefeated weekend at the DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas. She went 3-for-5 with a home run, a season-high four RBI and the walk-off hit in extra innings in the victory over UC Davis. Later that evening, Sweet homered for the second-straight game and scored a season-best three runs in the Pack’s 8-5 victory over UTEP.
Sweet’s lone hit in the 4-2 win over Portland State just so happened to be a two-run go-ahead home run in the top of the sixth that gave Nevada a 3-1 lead. Sweet helped Nevada run rule Southern Utah in its final game of the weekend with a two RBI single and a walk.
Nevada travels to Santa Clara for the SCU Invitational where it will take on the Broncos, UConn and Illinois-Chicago from Feb. 26-28.
