Reno has a new mayor, at least for the rest of today. Everett, a Newfoundland/Lab mix was proclaimed ‘mayor’ Thursday inside the Reno Council Chambers.
The unique experience was thanks to his adopted parents, who recently attended the SPCA’s annual charity event “An Affur to Remember," where they were the high bidders on this unique prize.
At noon, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve read an official proclamation naming Everett Mayor of Reno for the day.
Everett will now continue his day with a photo shoot at various landmarks around the Reno MidTown area.
The final stop will be at the SPCA of Northern Nevada, where Everett will receive his “retirement package,” consisting of a dog bed, bowl, gift basket, and 60-pound bag of dog food, presented by Charlene Hadwin, Executive Director for the SPCA of Northern Nevada.
“I want to thank Mayor Hillary Schieve, who supports the SPCA’s rescue and adoption mission,” said Charlene Hadwin, Executive Director for the SPCA. “Because of her support, we anticipate offering the Mayor for the Day opportunity again next year to animal lovers who attend our annual fundraiser 'An Affur to Remember.' Through this effort, we raised thousands of dollars to help homeless pets in our community, and I’m personally grateful to everyone who participated.”
Everett was adopted two years ago from the SPCA of Northern Nevada.
