Go Red for Women This Friday

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of women – all dressed in red - packed Saint Mary’s Center for Health in Reno today to rally support for a campaign close to their hearts. The group plans to Go Red for Women this week to support the American Heart Association's efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease.

A very active and athletic, Lori Patch was in the crowd. Lori is not only a cyclist, a skier and an outdoor enthusiast, she is also a survivor. "Last April my artery split - out of the blue. It caused 100% blockage and a heart attack and I had a stent put in."

Cardiologists diagnosed Lori with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection – or SCAD – which puts her, she says, in the 20% of the population who cannot prevent a heart attack with healthy habits. It certainly wasn't on her radar. However, she shares an important message for everyone else. "Eighty percent of the people out there can do something to hopefully improve their situation with diet, exercise and not smoking."

Like Lori, the group of people who gathered today hopes to educate and empower women to take charge of their heart health; not only for themselves, but for their families. Chrissy Menicucci is the Chair of this year’s Go Red for Women Luncheon and she adds the theme of the 12th annual event is “Heart Healthy at Every Age.” "If we can instill in our young people - at the earliest possible time - the importance of living a heart healthy life, then the benefits will carry through their lives and they'll be healthier adults."

The Go Red for Women Luncheon kicks-off on Friday with a Heart Health Expo beginning at 10 a.m. at the Downtown Reno Ballroom. For tickets, call the American Heart Association at (775) 322-7065 or go to https://ahareno.ejoinme.org/MyEvents/20152016RenoGoRedLuncheon/tabid/711766/Default.aspx

On Saturday, February 6th, join REMSA in front of Scheels for a 5K run/walk supporting AHA in its fight against heart disease and stroke. All participants are encouraged to wear your best red running gear. Prizes for the best dressed runner will be awarded following the run! All proceeds benefit the American Heart Association. The race starts at 8 a.m. Register at http://remsaeducation.com/runningredforheart.html
