Resting Metabolic Rate

Posted: Updated:

Pull-ups look effortless for Ron Price. "I work out at least six days a week." But he pushed his body to get to his fitness level. "It's a passion, too. It's more fun for me to be here than out doing anything else."

With personal goals, the 23-year-old athlete wants to take his training to the next level. Ron realizes, however, what he gets out of his workouts depends largely on what he puts into his body. That is why he decided to have his Resting Metabolic Rate tested at South Reno Athletic Club’s Metabolic Center. "Yeah, this will definitely be interesting to see if what I'm doing is right or if I need to keep upping it?"

The RMR technology requires a client to breathe through tube for nearly a half-hour. The machine reads the oxygen consumed and the carbon dioxide produced by his body, which is used to calculate his RMR. "Which is essentially the amount of calories a person's body burns per day at rest,” explains Karl Toth, the Marketing Director at South RAC. "It'll also show you how much fat you burn compared to carbohydrates."

Most importantly it will help you determine if you are getting enough calories to build muscle or if you need to tweak your nutrition to lose weight.

Ron hopes to add about 20 healthy pounds to his frame. He now knows he needs to add about 500 calories a day to his diet in order to reach his goal by summer.

South RAC’s RMR test costs $99 and you do not need to be a member of the gym to schedule an appointment. To learn more, go to
