Possible Cure for Baldness

Posted: Updated:

For millions of Americans, hair loss is just something they learn to live with. Now a new study is offering hope of a possible cure for baldness one day.

Dr. Angela Christiano and researchers at Columbia University Medical Center were able to rapidly regrow hair in mice using human hair follicles and a class of drugs called jak inhibitors. "Jak inhibitors seem to be among the very few number of compounds that produce hair growth very soon after their application."

Jak inhibitors are normally used to treat blood diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers discovered the dramatic results when they applied a topical form directly to the skin rather than orally.

The findings are encouraging to the estimated 50% of men over 50 who have some form of hair loss. But researchers caution this is just a first step and a lot more work needs to be done to see if it works and is safe on people.
