Businesses now have a chance to adopt a segment of highway and sponsor litter removal along Interstate-80 through Reno. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced Tuesday that it's beginning a partnership with Adopt-A-Highway in the Reno area. Spokesperson Greg Wooden says companies and individuals can pay from $175.00 to $250.00 per month to help sponsor the cost of removing debris along the interstate; and they get a sign with their name on it on the side of the highway. "People really look forward to sponsoring the highway. They look forward to having their name out there in a positive way, and then they see the highways are clean, it makes people have more pride in their community," Wooden said.
NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese says the program has already saved an estimated $500,000 in the Las Vegas area. "Our NDOT crews spend more than 4,000 man hours in any given year removing debris from local freeways and this is a way we can augment taxpayer dollars to keep our local freeways safe and clean," she said.
