The Mountain West released its 2015-16 Preseason All-Conference Men’s Basketball Team today in conjunction with the start of media days at The Renaissance in Las Vegas. The team, as selected by members of the media, features four players who were All-MW selections in 2014-15, including one first-team honoree. The five-member preseason squad is comprised of four seniors and one junior representing four institutions.
Fresno State’s Marvelle Harris received Preseason MW Player of the Year honors, while New Mexico’s Tim Williams garnered Preseason Newcomer of the Year accolades and UNLV’s Stephen Zimmerman, Jr., received the Preseason Freshman of the Year nod.
Harris, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard, was a first-team All-MW selection and earned MW All-Defensive Team honors last season after averaging 16.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He started 31 of the Bulldogs’ 32 games, while leading the Conference in steals per contest. The native of Rialto, California, scored 16.4 points per game ranked third in the MW. To end the season, Harris tallied double-digit scoring in 27 of Fresno State’s final 28 games, including seven 20-point performances.
Williams, a junior from Flossmoor, Illinois, redshirted in 2014-15 after transferring from Samford University. As a sophomore, he earned All-SoCon first team honors while leading the Bulldogs in points (17.6) and rebounds (7.5). Williams shot 60.3-percent from the field, a figure that ranked seventh nationally. In his first collegiate season, Williams earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors after averaging 14.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. In two seasons with the Bulldogs, he scored in double digits in 58 games.
Zimmerman is the second consecutive Rebel to be pegged as MW Freshman of the Year, joining Rashad Vaughn from 2014-15. The Las Vegas native, who is ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the ESPN 100, averaged 14.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game as a senior, while leading Bishop Gorman to a fourth consecutive state championship. He also added 4.2 assists and 2.4 blocks per contest.
Joining Harris on the preseason All-Conference team were San Diego State’s Winston Shepard, Boise State’s Anthony Drmic and James Webb III, and Wyoming’s Josh Adams. This is the second consecutive year Shepard and Drmic have earned preseason recognition.
Shepard earned All-MW second team honors in 2014-15, while averaging 11.1 points, and a career-best 5.3 rebounds per game. The Houston, Texas, native, who is the Aztecs returning leading scorer, started all 36 games, and registered 23 double-figure scoring performances.
Drmic only played seven games for Boise State last season before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery. The Australia native, averaged 15 points and five rebounds per game to start the year. Drmic currently ranks No. 12 on MW all-time scoring list (1,528).
Webb III earned MW Newcomer of the Year honors and was named to the All-MW Defensive Team in 2014-15. The Augusta, Georgia, native averaged 11.2 points, eight rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. He started final 27 contest for Boise State, scoring in double figures 20 times and registered eight double-doubles. In MW play, the Broncos outscored their opponents by 211 points while Webb III was on the floor.
Adams led Wyoming to its first MW tournament championship and first NCAA tournament berth since 2001-02. The Parker, Colorado, native averaged 12.8 points per game, which ranked second on the Cowboys and eighth in the MW. He added 3.3 rebounds and a team-best 1.4 steals per contest. Last season, Adams earned All-MW third team honors.
