Drone Zone Inspires Future Aviation

Posted: Updated:

There's a lot of buzz surrounding drones around the country, and that's no different here in Northern Nevada. In fact, the  the event has expanded their 'drone zone,'  to inspire kids to aviation to new heights.

"It's a really cool industry and I'd like to get more into it," said Joshua Carlson, a Junior at Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas.

"I find it really amazing," said Jose Rodriguez, a Senior at the same school.

As many as 3,500 Washoe County students are also expected to visit zone this week.

"It's bringing a new crowd out to the air races," said Warren Rapp, Director of the Nevada Advanced Autonomous Systems Innovation Center. There's still a lot of interest in the races themselves, he says. But there's something about drones that attracts the younger crowd.

But it's not just kids who are getting excited about the technology, adults are too.  Drones are becoming so popular that they're actually selling them at the air races. The models start out at about $40.

"The drones are growing in popularity every day," said  Jason Copeland, owner of CKRC Hobbies, a vendor in the Drone Zone. "So we're doing more to bring more variety and different styles in, from indoor flyers to outdoor aerial  filming."

Now in it's second year, the Drone Zone has already seen twice the amount of people they saw all of last year.  The zone is located in the southwest side of the property.

The National Championship Air Races last through Sunday at the Reno-Stead Airport.
