Portland Gets By Nevada Volleyball

Nevada Release

Despite claiming the third set and taking a lead late in the fourth, the Nevada volleyball team was not able to force a deciding fifth set as host Portland topped the Wolf Pack, 3-1, on the first day of the Portland Classic on Friday evening.

Sophomore Madison Foley continued her impressive start to the season as she posted a new career-high with 21 kills while senior Taylar Rothfuss came off the bench and tallied 26 assists for the Pack (1-3, 0-0 MW).

After dropping the first two sets, two kills from senior Sam Willoughby gave Nevada an early 2-1 advantage but multiple Pilot errors extended the Pack’s lead to 9-4. Portland tied up the set at 16-16 but Nevada responded with kills from Rothfuss and Willoughby to regain the lead, 18-16. Errors would plague the Pilots again in the latter half of the third and Nevada took advantage as the Pack took the set, 25-19.

Portland led by as much as seven, 18-11, in the fourth set but that did not deter the Pack. Consecutive kills from Foley sparked a 6-0 run that trimmed Nevada’s deficit to one, 18-17. With the score now at 20-19, kills from juniors Kathryn Groenweghe and Madison Morell gave Nevada its first lead since going up 5-4 earlier in the set. It wouldn’t be enough though as timely attacking went in Portland’s favor as the Pilot’s took the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
