A goal in the 102nd minute of play Friday afternoon allowed UC Irvine to sneak past the Nevada soccer team, 1-0, in a neutral site contest at Saint Mary’s.

In that 102nd minute, a through ball up the middle of the field allowed UC Irvine’s Corey Tobin to go one-on-one with the Wolf Pack’s starting goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos. Tobin fired her shot past the diving Quintos for the game-winning tally.

Up to that point, both the Pack and Anteaters (2-2-1) played equal with one another to even force the game into a second overtime.

It was a possession filled opening half as both teams traded on and off with control of the ball. Not many offensive chances were had by either side as just three total shots were tallied in the period. The Wolf Pack did create a few corner kick opportunities, getting one shortly after the start of the half and another as time ticked away in the period.

Coming out of the break, Nevada found itself in a prime position to strike first. Senior Erin Saxton broke through the Anteaters defense and sent a header in towards the net, but was denied by UC Irvine’s goalkeeper.

Offensive pressure increased for both teams in the second half. While the Pack didn’t end up with many shot attempts on the stat sheet, Nevada’s presence was felt in the opposing end. With about four minutes left in regulation, UC Irvine streaked into the Nevada end on a breakaway, but the Wolf Pack defense caught up to the striker, forcing her to check up.

The Anteaters raised their pressure on the Nevada defense in the first overtime period and found themselves with a wide open chance at a game-winning score. A turnover in front of the net settled right at the foot of a UC Irvine forward, but her shot sailed high above the crossbar, sending the game into a second overtime.

UC Irvine led in total shots by a 12-3 margin, however the Wolf Pack had more set piece opportunities with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Quintos compiled a four-save afternoon.

Nevada remains in Moraga to face tournament host Saint Mary’s this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The Gaels enter the game with an undefeated 4-0-1 record.
