Scientists Launch App to Monitor Lake Tahoe

Posted: Updated:

If you're a frequent visitor at Lake Tahoe, scientists are asking for your help. They are trying to monitor the quality of the lake's shores, but with a lake that size, they don't have enough scientists to cover it all.

Researchers with the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center decided the answer is kind of like crowdfunding, only with observations instead of money. They are asking people to download a free app and then report what they experience at the lake, whether it's water quality, trash on the beaches, wildlife activity, or pollution.

"We are trying to get a quantitative sense of the quality of different aspects of the near shore," Research Center Director Geoff Schladow said.

Using the Citizen Science Tahoe app, visitors or residents at the lake can record videos, post photos, or just describe what they're seeing and where they're seeing it. Scientists will use the information to target restoration and cleanup projects.

They say this type of input is going to be a huge help, since so many parts of the lake's near shore aren't easily accessible.

"It's important, because we have a team of scientists here who are out on the lake and out on the near shore, trying to record what's happening, but we can't be everywhere," Schladow said. "We can't be at every beach, every day."

The app is free, and available for Android and iPhones. Click here to learn more or download.
