Teaching Teachers at Sparks High School

Posted: Updated:

Teachers at Sparks High School are the ones getting an education this week. They're learning different classroom techniques during professional development just in time for the upcoming school year.

By contract, teachers don't have to return to school until Tuesday, but Monday, 70 employees ended their summer one day early to take part in this training.

"Teachers are collaborating," said Kevin Carroll, Principal of Sparks High. "They're working together on best practices, working on common assessments, looking at student data, and in the end, looking at student achievement. Hopefully we'll see some growth with our students this year."

This includes looking at test scores, and share what works and what doesn't work in a classroom. It also teaches the staff to embrace the fact that each student has different circumstances at home, and to remember that what teachers are doing at school, can transform a student's life.

"Those kids exist in our schools," said Brandon Jones, with Solution Tree, the company behind the training. "What we see across the nation is that we are losing those kids because of the way we do things for eight hours."

Because Sparks High School is a Title 1 school, a majority of funding for this program comes through grants. This development will continue throughout the school year.
