Aces Begin Road Trip with Win Over El Paso

Posted: Updated:

Big games from Danny Dorn and Matt Pagnozzi  led the Reno Aces  to an 8-4 win over the El Paso Chihauhuas Saturday night at Southwest University Park in El Paso.

Dorn’s 5-RBI night started early when he roped a two-run double to right-field in the top of the first inning to give the Aces an early 3-0 lead.

The Chihuahuas got a run back off Aces starter Allen Webster  in the home half of the opening inning on Cody Decker’s RBI double.

It didn’t take long for the Aces to erase that run. Pagnozzi led off the second with a solo blast to left, his fourth of the season to up the lead to 4-1.

A lead-off base from Nick Evans, and a walk issued to Jamie Romak, gave the Aces a pair of runners for Dorn in the third. He hit the first pitch he saw from Jason Lane over the right-field wall for a three-run homer and a 7-1 lead.

Webster worked around trouble with the big lead. In three of the first four innings, the right-hander stranded a pair of runners. He racked up eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings and picked up his third win of the year.

Pinch-hitter Jake Goebbert led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit for El Paso. He moved to second on a groundout, and came around to score on an RBI single by Ramiro Pena. The hit from Pena chased Webster from the game in favor of Matt Reynolds.

Alex Dickerson greeted Reynolds with a two-run homer to right, cutting El Paso’s deficit to 8-4. The left-hander settled in and worked the rest of the way for the Aces. He set down the side in order in the eighth, and worked around a one-out single in the ninth to lock down the win for Reno.

The win is number 499 in the history of the Reno Aces. Dorn finished the night 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and five RBI. Pagnozzi was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. Evans joined the multi-hit club and Romak hit his 21st home run of the year.

Game two of the four-game set is scheduled for Sunday night in El Paso. Right-hander Caleb Clay (7-6, 4.91) starts for the Aces against right-hander Chis Smith (2-5, 3.92) for the Chihuahuas. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PST.
