Training for a Triathlon

Training for a Triathlon

Posted: Updated:

Alicia Maria is starting her taper for her upcoming triathlon in June Lake. It's been a month and a half of serious training in the triathlon club at Saint Mary's Center for Health and Fitness. "Half mile swim, 10 mile bike and then a 3 mile run."

Cassie Goodman is one of the coaches of the club. She says anyone can do a sprint triathlon with just a little bit of training. "Start slow so they don't get hurt. But just working on the swimming technique, getting used to the open water and the running off the bike is another really big thing to focus on because your legs just feel completely different."

Alicia now hops on a bike. Under Cassie's direction, she peddles along flats and hills, training for the actual road. Cassie says for more experienced triathletes, looking to get faster, it's all about interval training and two work outs back to back. "So like bike run, bike run, things like that. Getting into the open water and really working on perfecting your form rather than just losing all your energy in the swim."

Alicia finishes her workout with a few laps around the indoor track. She's hoping to make it to the podium at this year's race.

"Yes I'm way ready! I'm very excited."

There's a great local sprint triathlon coming up in a few weeks. The Pyramid Lake Triathlon is on Saturday, August 1st. It starts at 8am.

If you mention this story, Saint Mary's will give you a discount on the tri club for the month of July. Call 775-954-0185 and ask for Cassie.
