Reno Rodeo Cattle Drive Rides Into Town

Posted: Updated:
As they crested the hills of Reno, it looks like a scene out of a western - the Reno Rodeo Cattle Drive wrapping up five long days and 100 miles on the trail.

"Exhilarating, you meet a lot of new people, excited to be out here, and come from all over the U.S., a real unique experience,” says Linda Bissett.

It's a time when city slickers can play cowboy, and experience what it's like to herd more than 300 cattle, in the hot, dry and dusty Nevada desert.

"What you really learn, it's a humbling experience, spend all day on a horse makes you understand what ranchers do, what they go through to make a living, it's tough, looks easy, it's tough!" exclaims Lewin Williams of Las Vegas.

The journey began in Doyle, California on Sunday, with a 6-8 hour ride each day, keeping the herd inline is no easy task, but many were here just to get away from it all. "It was an awesome trip, I came out here with my brother and nephew; we make this a family event every year. So, we get to spend some quality time together and you hardly ever get to do that."

Making their way down city streets, the crowds enjoyed every moment as they were transported back in time.

"It's not something you normally see, it's exciting to see the horses, everyone dressed up, the cowboys and wagons, it's a lot of fun,” says  spectator Nicole McNamara.

One thing is certain, those on the cattle drive will sleep well tonight after a successful trip to kick off the Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West.

The Reno Rodeo runs through Saturday, June 27th, with some bull riding, on tap for tonight and this weekend.
