New State Laws Strengthen Rights for Crime Victims

Posted: Updated:
Nevada's attorney general and local law enforcement held a press conference on Wednesday to discuss recently passed legislation designed to help victims of crime in Northern Nevada.

"Our victims of crimes are receiving further protections, and it also affords us the ability as prosecutors to have higher success rates in our prosecutions, so all and all these bills that were passed vastly improve the criminal justice system in Nevada” says Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks.

One bill allows a child to testify in court via a recording instead of in person- or allows an adult to testify on their behalf.

Another new law enhances penalties for child sex abuse case- making sexual assault of a minor a category a felony- and establishes the new crime of unlawful dissemination of an intimate image... commonly known as revenge pornography.

"With social media the internet, such easy access it was a necessary thing for us to establish and Nevada took a big first step in doing that,” says Alliance of Victims Rights Justine Hernandez.

Another new law creates a victims bill of rights as part of the Nevada constitution.
