Only on 2: Jalisco Tries to Change Image by Focusing on Tourism

Posted: Updated:
Last week, we told you how the new Volaris flight between Mexico and Reno generates $20 million a year for the region. But how do we benefit Mexico?

"If you have not been to Jalisco, you have not been to Mexico,” said Teresa Macias Salazar, Tourism Director, Zapopan Gobierno Municipal.

Salazar argues the Zapopan and the Guadalajara region have a lot to offer to people, especially for Americans.

“50% of the state's investment is in Zapopan,” she said. “We have big named hotels, we have ranches from the 1800's. We have tradition."

Stephan Coudon agrees. He's the general manager of the Presidente Intercontinental Hotel in Zapopan, a city near Guadalajara. Consider it Guadalajara's Sparks.

"It's very nice and the prices are very accessible,” said Coudon

Coudon has seen a change over the last few years and says his hotel is seeing more clients from around the world. But despite this grown, both Coudon and Macias-Salazar admit people from outside the country, specifically America, question the area's safety.

"Sometimes things happen here in Mexico,” said Coudon. “But the place is very safe. You know, it's very peaceful."
