Only on 2: How Guadalajara Flights Help Reno's Economy

Posted: Updated:
The fact that Volaris Airlines flights are taking off from Reno-Tahoe International Airport, is a major win in its own.

"That was a great milestone for us,” says Marily Mora, CEO Reno Airport Authority.

The nonstop flight between Reno and Guadalajara, Jalisco, a southern Mexican state, debuted last December. It was the first scheduled international flight at Reno/Tahoe since 1999. "We have a large Hispanic population, so it's a great victory for our community and Reno-Tahoe International Airport."

The airport says most people take this flight to visit family either in Northern Nevada or in other parts of Mexico.

And that equals cold hard cash for the region. "And that impact is $20 million a year to our local economy."

Chris Baum, president of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority agrees, and believes the relationship between Reno and Guadalajara could soon be even stronger. "As we grow here, industrially, with manufacturing and high-tech jobs, hopefully down the road, there will be some business connections with Guadalajara as well."

Landon Miller and photographer Luis Latino have a few more days in Guadalajara so be sure to keep it here on Channel 2 to see where their adventure takes them next.
