Bill Allowing 80 mph Speed Limit Passes Nevada Legislature

Posted: Updated:
A bill allowing Nevada to increase speed limits to 80 mph on some roads has passed the Assembly and now goes to Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Assembly members voted 31-11 to approve Senate Bill 2 on Tuesday.

The measure would allow the Nevada Department of Transportation to increase highway speed limits up to 80 mph if it chooses.

Existing Nevada law allows a top speed of 75 mph. Gustavson said raising speed limits would help truckers and cut down on travel fatigue for all drivers.

Representatives from Nevada's transportation department testified against the bill and said it would work against programs to limit traffic fatalities.

The measure passed out of the Senate on a 16-4 vote in April. (AP)
