Assembly Bill Would Limit Financial Payouts for Uninsured Drivers

Posted: Updated:
Nevada lawmakers are considering a bill that would limit lawsuit payouts for uninsured drivers involved in crashes.

Republican Assemblyman Pat Hickey presented Assembly Bill 7 to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday.

The measure would allow uninsured Nevada drivers to collect only financial damages related to medical and property costs and would prevent them from collecting noneconomic payouts like compensation for pain and suffering.

Hickey said the measure would help lower insurance rates for Nevada drivers and incentivize uninsured drivers to begin paying for insurance.

Democratic Sen. Aaron Ford said he was concerned that the measure would disproportionally affect poor and minority drivers and suggested a financial cap on collectable damages for uninsured drivers.

If the bill passes, Nevada would join 10 other states in enacting such legislation. (AP)
