With just a few finishing touches left, the new Juniper Village Apartments will be ready for residents to move in next week. Located at Fifth and Morrill near downtown Reno, all 44 units are already spoken for. "We opened up, day one with a waiting list of over 100 people. That's how much excitement we've had,” says Bram Buckley, president of NNCHRB.
Excitement because these brand new one and two bedroom units are upgraded and modern. The apartments have state-of-the art heating and cooling systems, appliances and solar panels as well as safety features, plus, amenities not found at all apartment complexes.
"A library, board games, lots of books for kids. As well as a Playstation 4 and video games and exercise equipment,” says Matthew Flemming, executive director of NNCHRB.
And they are affordable. This project was specifically created to serve low-income households with nine units set aside for special needs housing.
"The need is there. A lot of our clients are elderly, who are on Social Security,” says Buckley.
Flemming adds, "We do this solely through the revenue that generated by the clients that live here. So we don't take away from the tax payer, we give back."
And nearby businesses are happy they're here. A Salon 7 is across the street and says the apartments are a huge improvement from the empty dirt lot that used to sit there.
"A lot of our clients since it's gone up are definitely feeling more safe, more secure, because it's just - it's beautiful, the building is beautiful. It really gives it that peaceful look like it is an actual neighborhood now,” says Phillip Brown of A Salon 7.
The Juniper Village Apartments are owned and managed by the Northern Nevada Community Housing Resource Board. The nonprofit organization runs nine properties for low-income and at-risk families in the Reno-Sparks area. They encourage anyone who's interested to get on the waiting list as housing becomes available on a regular basis.
You are invited to attend the grand opening for the Juniper Village Apartments this Friday from 9am to 4pm. You can put yourself on the wait list or grab an application while you're there.
