Water Wisely

Posted: Updated:
Now is the time to begin watering your yard. How can you conserve 10% of water usage but still keeping your lawn green? It's possible if you know how to water the most efficient way as possible.

If you have an automatic sprinkler system, consider replacing old sprinkler heads, particularly the ones that emit mist.

“Half of that water just evaporates before it hits the lawn,” said Steven Fine, Marketing Director of Signature Landscape. “It's very inefficient."

Fine says by making that change, you could save upwards of 25% on your water bill. Fine says right now, you should only water twice a week, and do it twice each day for 10 minutes.

However, once it gets to be 80 degrees or warmer, then it's okay to water three or four times each day, however, only 10 minutes is still necessary.

“Be diligent,” said Fine. “Get up early in the morning in your slippers, turn on your water, but make sure you turn it off. Don't water for more than 10 minutes because at that point it runs off into the drain and that's not good for anybody."

He recommends to not water early in the morning because it could create a mold problem within your lawn. Don't water in the afternoon because it's simply inefficient. The best time to water is the morning between 7:00 am and 12:00 pm, and after 6:00pm each night.

Fine also says before you fire up your automatic sprinkler system, check it for leaks because if a leak goes unfound, it could waste thousands of gallons of water each month.
