Nevada Lawmaker to Make Case for State Lottery

Posted: Updated:
A Nevada Assemblyman is reviving a proposal that would create a state lottery.

Democratic Assemblyman Harvey Munford introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 6 last week and plans to testify on the bill on Thursday in the Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee.

Munford said the proposal would help generate revenue without imposing a new tax, and would require lottery proceeds to support public education and senior citizens. Nevada's constitutional ban on lotteries was approved in 1990.

Las Vegas Sands spokesman Ron Reese said the casino industry was opposed to the plan. Munford brought a similar bill forward two years ago that died in committee.

The resolution would need to be approved by two consecutive legislative sessions before going to the voters in 2018 for final approval.  (AP)
