Lawmakers Revisit Allowing Concealed Guns at Campuses

Posted: Updated:
Nevada Republicans are proposing a bill that would allow concealed weapon permit holders to bring guns on school grounds.

Similar proposals failed during the last two sessions. Supporters say with Republicans controlling the Assembly and the Senate, the bill's chances have improved.

The bill is scheduled for a hearing in the Assembly Committee on Government Affairs on Thursday.

The proposal would allow those with concealed gun permits to bring firearms on to college campuses, K-12 schools, daycare centers and parts of airports.

Current Nevada law requires concealed weapon holders to obtain permission from administrators before bringing guns to prohibited areas. Republican bill sponsor Assemblywoman Michele Fiore said it would help prevent sexual assaults and expand 2nd Amendment rights.

School districts, college officials and several student groups oppose the bill.
