Nevada Softball Drops One to Utah

Posted: Updated:
Despite a 3-for-4 day from senior shortstop Karley Hopkins and a solo home run from junior right fielder Jasmine Jenkins, the Nevada softball team could get past Utah on the final day of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic as the Utes topped the Wolf Pack, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Chase Redington (2-3) took the loss for the Pack after tossing 3.0 innings and giving up three earned runs. Junior Hannah Harger went 1-for-4 in her first start of the season for Nevada (3-7, 0-0 MW) while senior catcher Ashley Butera went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI single.

Utah put up three runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run and pushed another run across in the second to give themselves an early 4-0 lead. After Redington was lifted in the third inning, sophomore McKenna Isenberg came on in relief for the Pack and struck out three while blanking the Utes in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Pack made a late game push in the top of the sixth when Jenkins blasted her second home run of the season, a solo shot, to left-center field that cut Nevada's deficit to three, 4-1. After the Utes plated two runs in the home half of the sixth, senior Molly McWilliams led off the top of the seventh with a single. With Butera at the plate, McWilliams advanced to second on a wild pitch before the senior catcher knocked her in on an RBI single that made it 6-2 Utah.

Nevada will be back in action next weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. where the Pack will take on Utah, Oregon State, Maryland, Syracuse and Cal State Fullerton.
