Importance of Winter Watering

Posted: Updated:

With the winter season here, you might think you can get away without watering your yard. That is not the case according to local gardening experts.

"They will just be weakened," said Jon Bruyn, a plant doctor at Moana Nursery in Reno referring to what will happen if your yard is not watered enough during the winter. Vegetation also has a larger chance of getting diseases, and could become infested with insects too.

Bruyn says watering a couple times a month will work just fine.

"Leave it for an hour,” he said. “That's probably equivalent to an inch of precipitation or rainfall. That's sufficient."

For vegetation that has just been planted, it's a good idea to increase the frequency of watering.

But is watering in the winter a waste, especially with drought conditions? He tells us, “no' because it actually saves water in the long run.

"It's creating a healthy plant that's not going to grow rapidly and use a considerable amount of water to come out of its stressed dormancy during the spring."
