Carson City Struggles With Development in Historic District

Posted: Updated:

There's a saying that you can't fight city hall. But don't tell that to Alexander Kirsch and his neighbors in the Historic District of Carson City. They all live there and they have always followed the codes and rules of the district. And they are concerned about what a planned development in their  neighborhood would mean.

"The first proposed two duplexes and then it became four and then it was reduced in a compromise and now it's back to a project that would house 16 people," Kirsh said.

"Sixteen people is a lot of people in a half a block," added his neighbor Tom Sprekal.

"It's not really the design we have a problem with. But parking and traffic for 16 people is a lot," said Bazil Slaughter who lives across the street from the open lot. "It's just not to scale with the size of this property."

There have been problems with the size of the project, with the landscaping and with concerns for traffic. And Planning Manager for Carson City Susan Door Pansky said it has been confusing. It was on, it was off, it was expanded, it was downsized and it was most recently denied by the Historic Resources Commission.

"The problem with that, Dorr Pansky says," is that the Historical Resources Commission denied it on the density issue and that's not within their scope of review."

And of course the developer is appealing that decision. So it's now headed to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for review...again. That meeting is set for Thursday, January 15th.
