Steninger to Fill Elko County Commission Vacancy

Posted: Updated:
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed former newspaper publisher and editor Rex Steninger to a vacant seat on the Elko County Commission.

Sandoval announced Monday that the 59-year-old Steninger will fill the vacancy created by the death in October of Commissioner Grant Gerber.

Gerber, a lawyer, died from injuries suffered when he fell from a horse in Kansas during a cross-country ride protesting a federal crackdown on livestock grazing. He was 72.

The governor says Steninger's background as a rancher, contractor, hunter and publisher of the Elko Daily Free Press will serve Elko County constituents well.

Steninger's family owned and operated the newspaper until 2000.

Steninger also previously served positions with the Nevada Press Association board, the Silver State Stampede and the Lamoille Water District.
