The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots Give Back to Families in Need

Posted: Updated:
A center to help provide Christmas for a lot of families in need, in the Reno/ Sparks community opened for business on Friday. For 125 years The Salvation Army has been offering families help in filling Christmas wishes, and to do that, it takes a lot of toys.

More than 500 people were in line this morning at The Salvation Army Christmas center, some people lining up as early as 4 a.m.

Every year The Salvation Army partners with Toys for Tots, in hopes of providing families and their children with gifts this holiday season. Toys were handed out to the families of children all ages.

Janine Zielinski, the Washoe County Salvation Army Coordinator, says people felt comfortable at today's location and everyone was in the Christmas spirit.

"I've never seen a community come together like I have here. And I'm so grateful to be able to help in getting it sorted out, and put together, and prepared, and we're ready," says Zielinski.

This year organizers plan on providing toys to more than 3000 families, which means 10,000 children, will not go without gifts this Christmas.

Registration for the toy distribution began on Friday at 589 E. Prater Way and continues through December 22nd.

With a valid ID, proof of low income, birth certificate of the children, and proof of Washoe County residency, children can be registered to receive gifts this year.

The Salvation Army still needs further help as well. Monetary and toy donations are now being accepted at The Salvation Army located on Sutro Street or by calling 775-688-4555.
