City of Reno Rolls Out Buy Local Movement

The City of Reno has been supporting the Buy Local effort for the last few years, but in 2014 the City is broadening its approach. The campaign has evolved from a marketplace to a multi-faceted outreach campaign to support small businesses in the Reno-Sparks area.

“A big part of the holiday tradition involves shopping for gifts for family and friends, so this is a great promotion to remind our community to support our local businesses,” Reno City Manager Andrew Clinger says.

The City's Buy Local movement leverages the American Express Small Business Saturday on November 29, 2014 and encourages citizens to “shop small” through the holiday season and keep their dollars here in our community.

Statistics show that every dollar spent locally generates three dollars in local economic success. Studies also show that if consumers shifted 10 percent of their spending to local businesses, it would generate $350 million in the local community.

“We believe that fostering a movement will create general awareness and encourage everyone to keep their dollars local,” Clinger adds.

There are a number of ways the community can join the movement:
•    If you own a business, the City of Reno has created a map of locally owned and operated businesses. If local business owners want their store on the map, they need to complete the form at Reno.gov/LocalStores. To date, more than 70 businesses have registered.
•    As a neighborhood champion of the Shop Small campaign, the City of Reno received tote bags, welcome mats, pens, buttons, stickers, and more. Business owners who sign up for the Buy Local map can pick up swag items to distribute to their shoppers on the second floor of Reno City Hall.
•    If you are a shopper and want to support small business, the small business map is live at Reno.gov/BuyLocal, and residents can use it to seek out businesses that fit their shopping interests.
•    Join the movement! Show your support and pledge to buy local this holiday season by texting “Yes” to 775-434-1936.
