"Nevada Sings" to Break a Record

Posted: Updated:

At spots all over the state today, thousands gathered at 10:00 a.m. to set a new record...for “most people in a U.S. state to sing their state song at once.” We came out to one Reno location, where Nevadans came out to sing out some state love.

In the brisk mid-morning air just outside the Atlantis casino, Whitney Ginsburg went over her lines...the words to the song "Home Means Nevada." After looking them over, this native Nevadan said it covered just what she loves about her state: "Like, there's nothing that looks like Nevada. Like if you're on a road trip or you're flying in, you know when you're home."

Fellow Atlantis employee Tom Ducey is not a native. His road began in California, then Mississippi. Here, he found great scenery...with more opportunity: "That's what home means to me. It's the whole ball of wax. It's not just a job, it's your life."

It's a connection that, if we had time, we would have heard repeated over and over again. A crowd of Atlantis employees gathered outside their building, but they were not ordered to be there…just a memo inviting them to show some state love if they wanted to. Over 100 did want to come out and sing the song. According to employee Patrick Connolly, "That's the great thing about Nevada, is that you talk to my friends from California or my friends from the Midwest or East Coast, they don't know their state song. I know it from elementary school."

Patrick knows it by heart from the days when they recited it in school every morning. For that reason, he was elected “conductor” today. His favorite line in the song? "Out by the Truckee, silvery rills...out where the sun always shines." For him, it goes to the heart: “Having my feet in the water, my feet in the Truckee. That beauty that comes from that is where it hits home the most."

Then...at precisely 10 o'clock, the crowd sang in perfect unison…closing off with the last line: "Right in the heart of the golden west...home means Nevada to me." Cheers followed.

As beautiful as the song is, those who love Nevada most say even those words...fall a little short. As Patrick Connolly told us, "It really is difficult to put into words how beautiful Nevada truly is."
