Someone 2 Know: Run for Education

Posted: Updated:
Jennifer, Jason and Brian are training for an event that gives them great pride.

For several years, they've participated in the "Run for Education" which helps area schools earn money for their academic and fitness needs.

And for these now sixth graders every fall - the running season begins with Rita Cannan's annual jog-a-thon.
Hundreds of students solicit sponsors. And in year's past, the fruits of their laborious fundraiser have gone to PE equipment, even the kindergarten playground.

"So little kids can also have an opportunity to be active,” says Jennifer.
But every year, the jog-a-thon also raises money to pay for the "Run for Education" entry fees of Cannan students.
"Last year we had 300 students and their families participate,” says parent Cherie Clinton.
Their impressive turnouts has earned them top honors since 2008.

The Education Alliance of Washoe County hosts the Run for Education - with 100% of the funds generated - directly benefiting area students.

The top three schools - with the most participation - earn a good chunk of money to put towards their school's needs. Proceeds also support low-income secondary students with things like tutoring.

Thousands are raised every year with the five and 10k races... as well as a half-mile fun run -- which is what the Cannan kids will do.

But not alone...
"Sometimes I run with my classmates and my dad and my mom,” says Jason.

Jennifer adds, "And tell me, is it hard? It's hard, ‘cause sometimes you lose your breath."
But they're willing to huff and puff - if it gives them another chance to earn money for their school - this time to pay for a full-time PE teacher.
And the students say striving for this goal - by striding together - is pretty cool.

"It feels good,” says Brian.

“Are you pretty proud of your school?

The Run for Education is Sunday at the Sparks Marina. Channel 2 is proud to be a sponsor of this event.
