Campaign 2014: Midterm Election Preview

Posted: Updated:
The midterm election is just a few weeks away. And when the dust settles we could be looking at a very different set of leaders both nationally and here at home.

I sat down with political scientist Eric Herzik for Face the State this week to discuss some of the races to watch this election.

In Northern Nevada, Congressional Seat in District 2, currently held by Mark Amodei, is up for a vote.

Congress has one of the lowest approval ratings ever in history, just 14%, so I asked Herzik if he thinks we'll see any big changes in the our congressional leaders.

In short - he said no.

"Most congressional members run in very safe districts. That's the result of redistricting. They have incredible incumbency advantages, in terms of fundraising, in terms of being able to communicate with their constituents."

Herzik and I also discussed the three ballot questions up for a vote this election on creating a Nevada court of appeals, removing the language in the state constitution that caps taxes on mining and the hot-button issue of the margin tax.

I asked him if he thought this controversial measure would pass.

"The sky is falling, depending on who you talk to. If it passes the sky falls, and if it doesn't pass, the sky falls. I do not think it passes. I'm surprised it's this close."

To watch the full segment, tune in or set your DVR for Face the State this weekend. It's airing on Saturday at 4:30 am and 4:30 pm and on Sunday at 2:30 and 6:30 am and 4:30 pm.
