The race for Seat F for the Washoe County School Board is one being waged between a candidate with a lot of endorsements and one with a lot of public service experience. The seat is currently held by Estella Gutierrez. She is leaving for heath reasons. Both Veronica Frenkel and Jim Shaw hope to replace her.

Veronica Frenkel has a background in leadership. In fact she teaches leadership at TMCC and spent five years training employees for Washoe County. She has lived in the area for 18 years and has kids in the system.

"I feel like I can put all my skills to good use to bring people together and help get things back on track," she says.

Frenkel also has a lot of endorsements.

"I have the Teachers Association, the Washoe Education Foundation, the Realtors, the Chamber of Commerce, Sheriff Mike Haley, Frankie Sue Del Papa and as of today, (Reno) Mayor Bob Cashell."

Her opponent, Jim Shaw has only one endorsement so far: the Carpenter's Union. He says that is in part due to the fact that he supports the Margin Tax as a way of funding education. And what he lacks in endorsements he makes up for in public service experience.

"I was on the Sparks Citizens' Advisory Board and then the Sparks City Council. Then I was on the Washoe Commission and now I'm on the State Ethics Board."

He says he knows holding both a position on the Ethics Board and the School Board would be a conflict of interest and plans to resign from the Ethics Board if elected to the WCSD.

"I am a consensus builder," Shaw says. "I have dealt with challenges on other boards and I think I could be instrumental in helping here."
