Local Foundation Moves Ahead to Remove WCSD Trustees

Posted: Updated:
The room was packed during Tuesday's WCSD board meeting when trustees voted 5-2 to buy out the remainder of Superintendent Pedro Martinez's contract.

Emotions ran high and the majority of comments made to trustees were geared toward disappointment in their actions and a need to move forward.

It's also those opinions that are fueling the recall effort launched by a group of influential community leaders called the Washoe Education Foundation.

Spokesman Perry Di Loreto says the next step is the ballot box.

"We have an election coming up in November," he said. "Barbara Clark needs to lose that election. And I and some others concerned will do everything we can to see that that happens."

In addition to backing Nick Smith in District C, the foundation is backing Veronica Frenkel in District F which is being vacated by Estela Gutierrez.

And they have high hopes for a strong appointment to Dave Aiazzi's seat when he resigns in November.

And after the dust settles from the election he says they'll re-evaluate what's next. But he's clear that they are fully for change.

"We really feel we need a new board here," Di Loreto said. "This group just blew $500,000! How many teachers' salaries would that be? We have schools where things need to be fixed! We intend to keep this before the public and keep it alive."
