Executive Director, April Gonzales says they can house upwards of 10 women at a time while also helping them find jobs and continue their education. Their efforts are funded by grants and donations, “To keep the lights on, the pantry filled and the internet going so that they can complete classes and find jobs,” explains April. Casa de Vida also provides them with the essentials for when the baby gets here. Kara tells us, “When I came here I had nothing. They've helped with a crib to all the clothes I need." After her baby boy arrives, she will receive even more help from a woman across town.
Mena Spodobalski is a figure competitor, a trainer and the owner of MRI Fitness Training Complex. Her gym - like her clients - has undergone a major transformation. "MRI is now the largest private training facility in Reno,” she says. “We're so excited. We just expanded and literally doubled our space." To celebrate the expansion, Mena and her team of trainers are giving back with an open house Friday, where they will hold a raffle to raise money for Casa de Vida. “We have great raffle prizes, like skis signed by Olympic Gold Medalist David Wise.” Plus, after the girls have their babies they will receive personal training here for six weeks. “I think that's enough time to teach some healthy habits." Healthy habits not just for themselves, but for their children, too. Mena hopes their time together will also teach them that nothing is impossible. The MRI open house is Friday, September 5th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the gym. The address is 895 East Patriot Boulevard, Suite 108. All are welcome to stop by. To learn more about MRI Fitness, log onto www.mrifitness.com.
