NASA Awards Grants to 4 Community Colleges Including TMCC

Posted: Updated:
The Nevada System of Higher Education is celebrating a $500,000 grant from NASA.

The grant will go to four community colleges in Nevada including Truckee Meadows Community College here in the north.

The idea behind it is to develop programs that will attract typically underserved populations in science, technology, engineering and math.

They're specifically targeting women and minorities.

"You don't know where the next important idea is going to come from. So it'd be a shame if somebody got shut out because they felt like, 'well, that's not my community,'” says physics and astronomy professor Dan Loranz.

This money will help TMCC create a community of professors, NASA scientists and students.

Along with TMCC, the College of Southern Nevada, Western Nevada College, and Great Basin College are getting some of the grant.
