Cost of LA streetcar line trimmed by millions

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Supporters of a plan to build a streetcar line in downtown Los Angeles are cheering new estimates that show the project may cost millions less than previously thought.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( the consulting firm URS Corp. said Tuesday that the proposed four-mile route could be built for about $270 million.

Last fall, it was announced the initial cost for the transit loop would be $327 million.

The office of Councilman Jose Huizar, a supporter of the project, said expenses could fall further when engineers begin their work.

The newspaper says despite the lower price tag, the project could still face a potential funding gap of about $100 million, even if federal money comes through.
