Panel Backs $1.25M for Drone Research in Nevada

Posted: Updated:

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada lawmakers are kicking in more than $1 million to help get the state's fledgling drone testing industry off the ground.

The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee voted Wednesday to spend $1.25 million from a $4 million fund set aside in the 2013 session to help the state develop testing of the aerial technology.

Agency Director Steve Hill says the allocation to the Governor's Office of Economic Development will help the agency move forward with drone testing by private-sector companies as it moves toward self-sufficiency.

Nevada was named last year as a national testing site for the new technology, known formally as unmanned aerial vehicles. Five companies have tested in Nevada so far.

Earlier this week, California-based Ashima Devices announced it's moving its drone headquarters and 400 jobs to Reno.
