Suspect in California Amber Alert Arrested in Hawthorne

Posted: Updated:

The suspect in an AMBER alert issued Thursday night out of Bishop, California was arrested in Hawthorne after police say she abducted her son.

According to the Bishop Police Department, the boy's father has sole custody, and called this afternoon saying 43-year-old Angel Schat had abducted their 4-year-old son.

They say Schat's family member reported that Schat had called them asking to borrow money for a flight out of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, but the family member refused. Police say surveillance video shows Schat and her son leaving the airport around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

A few hours later, the Mineral County Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call from a driver claiming to be following the suspect car on Highway 95 near Walker Lake.

The Mineral County Sheriff's Office tells us deputies stopped the car, but Schat resisted arrest and was eventually pulled from the vehicle at gun-point.

The boy was placed into protective custody unharmed while waiting for family members from California to come pick him up.

Schat is being booked into the Mineral County Jail where she may face charges related to resisting arrest, before being extradited back to California.
