Proposal to Create Free Speech Zones at Reno Special Events

Posted: Updated:
The Reno City Council got an update Wednesday on a change to the city code that would allow the creation of "free speech" areas in and around special events on public property.

“It could be Artown, it could be Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations, any of those types of events, this will allow artists a specific area to go in and express their First Amendment right,” says Michael Chaump, Development and Business Services Manager, City of Reno.

Along with the creation of free speech zones, the change will clarify how people can display signage and merchandise around special events.
The city says the current ordinance had some constitutional issues regarding the First Amendment, and the new one would clarify them.

The council will take a final vote on whether to adopt the ordinance at their meeting on September 10th, and it would become law the week after that.
