Police Stress Bike Safety, Especially During Start of New School Year

Posted: Updated:
You can get to school by car, by bus or maybe by walking. However, if your child rides their bike to class, police have some reminders.

Sgt. Marlene Cleveland stresses the fact that once you are on the street as a bike rider, you are acting like a car. For that reason, all of the normal traffic laws must be followed, or riders could potentially face fines.

Cleveland says most accidents happen when both bicyclist or a driver isn't paying attention.

Right now, she says, so far, so good.

"I have not seen any major traffic accidents between a car or a pedestrian or bicyclists," said Cleveland. "Obviously the people that are going to lose on those are the pedestrian or bicyclists."

Sgt. Cleveland stresses the importance of wearing a helmet, and wearing brighter clothes because it'll make you more visible.

Don't swerve in and out of traffic, avoid distractions, and take your time.

However, if you are a parent, police have a reminder for you:

"Lead by example" she said. "Your children are going to do what you do on a bicycle. So for you, wear your helmet, and follow the traffic laws."
