Teen Recovering After Near Drowning at Sand Harbor

Posted: Updated:
19-year-old Jake Blackmon's parents say the teen has made a remarkable recovery in recent days, since almost dying at Lake Tahoe last month.

“Just a few days ago he could hardly point to the letters on this chart they had and now he's up there texting with his friends so it's just a miracle recovery,” says LaNay Blackmon.

On July 30th, Jake was swimming with a friend when he went under the water, stopping his heart.

Bystanders came together to help get him to shore and give CPR and get him breathing again before he was taken by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

An ER nurse, who just happened to be paddleboarding nearby at the time, dove 20 feet down into the lake to rescue him.

“When I looked at him on the beach, I thought he was going to die. I've been a nurse for 30 years and usually I'm pretty good at this, but in this case I was very wrong and I am so happy,” says Joe Woodman.

A fund has been set up to pay for Jake's recovery online.
