Police Report Increase of Shots Fired Calls Near Midtown Reno

Posted: Updated:
Reno police officers went door-to-door to talk with residents on Friday about an upswing in gun shots reports.

Police say they've received a high volume of shots fired calls reported near the intersection of Locust Street and Grand Canyon Boulevard east of Virginia Street and north of Plumb Lane.

Police met with neighbors to try and get a better sense of what's behind the increase in calls.

“The main concerns is interacting with the community and finding out what they can do to make the community feel more safe and more secure,” says Pastor Emiliano Pasillas, Church of Christ.

Police say efforts like this allow officers to determine how comfortable people feel in their neighborhood.

It also allows officers to meet with residents in a safe and controlled environment, and reassure them that they're here to help.

Police say people they spoke with today said the reported shots might in fact be fireworks.

Police say people living here tell them they feel safe but do not necessarily think it is the best neighborhood.

“Overall we're getting a sense that people in this community not only feel safe but it's a very close knit community from block-to-block,” says Sgt. Mike Browett.

Officers say they'll analyze the results of today's meetings to figure out how to redirect their patrol resources to address residents' concerns.
