Parents Hit Area Stores for School Supplies

Posted: Updated:
With the start of school just five days away, now is the time when Washoe County parents are hitting the school supply store. But how can you shop smartly?

Beck Marko, an avid couponer and the mother of a sixth, fourth, and third grader at Hunter Lake Elementary School, is excited for the start of school.

She has noticed a longer list of supplies for her kids, from pencils, pens, and glue to Kleenex and Clorox Wipes.

“We have probably spent $150 total this school season buying clothing and all of that fun stuff,” said Marko.

According to Huntington Bank's Annual Backpack Index, it costs an elementary school parent $642 in supplies, an 11% increase from 2013. The same survey says middle school supplies are up 20% to $918, and high school's prices are $1,284, only a 5% increase.

Statistics like those can be daunting, but putting a little effort can save you money, says Marko.

“If you have time for coupons, this time of the year they'll have in store coupons or items that come with coupons,” she said.

It's also important to not procrastinate on shopping because not only will it save consumers money, but parents and students will have a better chance of getting the items on the list.
