Recent Area Rainfall a Relief For Local Garden Shops

Posted: Updated:
People who garden are finding the recent rainfall in our area beneficial for them, especially because it's been so difficult to grow plants in these dry conditions we've had recently.

"With the thunderstorms we've had earlier in July, and then the start of August here has been very much of a blessing, as far as the rainfall," said Jon Bruyn, a plant doctor at Moana Nursery.

Moana Nursery has seen a lot of business the last few days from people who want to touch up their gardens and lawns after seeing the wet weather.

"It washes off the plants and makes sure the dust is off," Bruyn said. "The smoke we were getting from the local fires was accumulating on our landscapes and on the nursery plants. That certainly gives them a nice, fresh feeling, and it just makes it feel like planting weather too."

But, even with the recent rainfall, Bruyn is still urging gardeners to keep a consistent water schedule.

"It's not enough to water your lawn. So, you will have to continue to water. You can water less, and you can count these days as a pass day."

He also says it's currently a prime time to add some fertilizer to your lawn.

"If you need to fertilize, and you've held off because it's August. It's hot and dry, and you're worried about burning, this is a good time to fertilize with a natural fertilizer."
