City Manager Nick Marano is pleased to announce the beginning of a new chapter in animal services in the capital city. Carson City has reached a conceptual agreement with the Nevada Humane Society, Nevada’s first and most highly regarded animal welfare group, in a new partnership to lead Carson City’s Animal Services, to include adoptions, shelter, and regulation services. This public/private relationship will enable Carson City to provide its citizens expanded levels of service and further expand Northern Nevada’s leadership position in animal stewardship.

The partnership will allow Nevada Humane Society to leverage over 80 years of experience and take Carson City to the next level in animal welfare. It will also make Carson City the second community in Nevada to become no-kill, which is defined as a shelter that does not euthanize animals for time or space. A no-kill shelter saves more than 90% of the animals that arrive; only euthanizing animals that have no quality of life or that are considered dangerous. Nevada Humane Society has followed this mission since 2006, saving nearly 70,000 lives, and is proud to be given the opportunity to create the same successes in Carson City.
