Washoe County School Nurses Prepare for New School Year

Posted: Updated:
The start of school for nearly 63,000 Washoe County students is less than a week away, and school nurses and clinical aides are gearing up for the new year.

"Summer break is over for the nurses," said school nurse Jason Galusha. "They started back today."

37 school nurses and nearly 100 clinical aids are back at school this week, making sure they're ready for the upcoming school year.

"The most important thing for school nurses right now is to make sure their clinics are up and running," said Galusha.

Monday, they met at Washoe County Student Health Service's headquarters to gear up with medical equipment. The training also allowed the district's new nurses to get experience from ones who have been with the district for a while.

"63,000 kids are going to show up in one week," said Dana Balchunas, director of Student Health Services. "We need to have everything up and ready to go for students who have health issues."

Balchunas is also reminding parents that all seventh graders are required to have their tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis shots-- or TDAP. "The state law requires that we ensure all incoming seventh graders before they come to school have that TDAP," said Balchunas.

She says students who move into the district from different states or countries are the ones who need the reminder of getting the TDAP and the secondary Hepatitis A shots the most. If not, "those kids who do not have the shot, may not attend," she said.
